Our members start in a GA aircraft like the Grob tutor or Cessna 152 to teach VFR patterns, radio comms and basic instrument procedures like using ILS, VOR, NDB and GPS. This will take about 3 to 4 hours. We also discuss how to flight plan, read charts and have a mini-quiz at the end of each unit where instructors will ask 5 to 10 questions about subjects relating to the flying. Some basic emergency practices are also taught like stall and spin recovery
After completing this training they will move onto the aircraft they are training for like fast jet, cargo aircraft, surveillance or another category. This will be three hours of training in day and night conditions to preform IFR and VFR navigation using GPS, ILS, VOR, NDB and TACAN.
The final training will take 4 to 5 hours and this is to learn how to utilize the aircraft for its purpose learning procedures like low level flying, air combat maneuvering, air to air refueling and other different types of training dependent on operations. During this pilots will show what they are capable of and will be shown how to use it. During this they will go over emergency procedures going over engine failures on take-off and inflight as required by VATSIM but also things such as loss of landing gear.
Finally a 2 hour exam will be conducted at one of the training bases (which may vary) like RAF valley, RAF Brize Norton or Sheppard air force base. This exam goes over practical navigation and also theory based questions which change depending on operations.
